Rock N Run Club a Big Hit!
By Wendy Kroenke, Executive Director WR4K
In the early morning, you hear it... off in the distance, then a bit louder, then even louder.
The sound of thumping feet.
The giggles.
The calls of encouragement.
And of course the latest Hannah Montana tune blasting at high volume....
What does it mean? Well, to a student at Ivey Ranch Elementary School it means it's time to Run!!! The Rock N Run Club is a huge hit with the children of Ivey Ranch Elementary in Oceanside! The club meets every morning before school starts to get the blood pumping, the energy bumping, and the braining humming!
Every morning students are invited to run their 1/10-mile track for 20 minutes prior to the start of class. The President of We Rock 4 Kids!, Karen Johnson, meets the students every morning with a smile on her face and some of today's hottest hits to get the kids motivated to move. As each student finishes a lap they are greeted by parent volunteers as well as members of the local Oceanside Pacific Kiwanis club to mark their hand with a dot. Each dot collected signifies the number of laps a student has completed that morning. 10 laps equates to one mile. Once students enter their classroom at the beginning of the day, their teacher records the number of laps completed per student. For every mile completed the children receive foot charms for their necklace chain provided by the PTO. When the student has completed 10 miles, they trade their foot charms in for a 10 mile charm. Once the student has completed 26 miles, they turn in their feet charms and their 10 mile charms for the Marathon Charm indicating their completion of 26 miles! From there they can earn 26x2 (52 miles) and 26x3 (78 miles) charms, then finally a 100 mile charm.....making them a member of the elite Mega Mile Club.
Karen, who gets quite a kick out of watching the students, thoroughly enjoys this time of day. "It is simply amazing to watch all the energy these children have, the love of being outside and the sheer enjoyment in completing another mile to get one more foot charm in their choice of colors".
