Learning and Preparing for Safe Web Browsing.

Just because you're paranoid does not mean they are not out to get you.

Browsing and shopping the Internet: viruses, spyware, trojan horses... what is a person to do? Shut off the computer?

Not necessarily.

What is necessary are some basic changes in the way you use the Internet. Make them a habit and you can surf, browse, and purchase on the web safely.

Here is our list of top ten safe web use rules:

  1. Upgrade your browser to either Internet Explorer 7 or FireFox 2.x**
  2. If you use Windows, upgrade your anti-virus software regularly.
  3. Upgrade your browser to either Internet Explorer 7 or FireFox 2.x** (Did you miss the first one? Do it now, do it first!)
  4. Avoid "free" software, and DON'T click on any "unannounced popup" windows, unless you enjoy living dangerously.
  5. Oh, did you upgrade your browser yet?  (They have popup blockers!!)
  6. When shopping, look for recognized "security" systems like VeriSign, Thawte, etc..  Before entering sensitive information make sure the little "lock" is set on your browser (usually in the lower status bar of the window.)   Also, look for support options: Does this company look like they are willing to stand behind their products?
  7. Be careful of PayPal. Companies that ONLY use PayPal may also be "fly-by-night" companies.
  8. Make sure the company you are purchasing from has posted "Terms and Conditions". Read them FIRST!  If they are missing, you might reconsider purchasing from this company.
  9. eBay is not for the faint of heart.  Luck is not just nice... it is a requirement.
  10. Last and Most Important: Upgrade your browser to either Internet Explorer 7 or FireFox 2.x**

Well, there you have it!  It is no more dangerous than walking down the sidewalk or shopping at the mall.  Many of the same common sense rules apply. Remember, if it looks to good to be true, it probably is. The web has many of the same dangers.  Follow these rules and you will enjoy the web and all it has to offer.

**There are other good browsers like Opera and Safari (Mac) of which the latest shipping versions are equally safe, but these are the top two.
