Common Website Mistakes - Part Three

Your Website Should Not Look Like Your Company Structure.

Web Content Vs. Company Structure (or Business Processes)…Why this is important! Your clients do not care how your company is organized or structured. They care about what you can do or provide for them.

Structuring your website around how you have structured your business is nothing more than an exercise in documenting your company organization.  Your website needs to be "customer focused" and only be of value to the customer, NOT YOU!

The website should be designed  by the tasks your clients wish to perform on your site, even if that requires two or three very different business processes or departments** contributing to a single page.

Sometimes it is necessary to have information from one department show up in two or more parts of the site, and many times you must collaborate between multiple departments to meet your clients' expectations.

**Small businesses often don't have "departments" per se.  Therefore one can also view this as different business processes that are often performed by the same person.  The danger is that a single person will often not realize that different customers might need their services in different ways and combinations.
