How to leverage Twitter in your Business

Twitter is the hottest social media tool that allows people to connect online through 140 characters of information.  More and more businesses are leveraging Twitter as a way to promote their business and communicate with clients and business resources.

One of the keys of success to maintaining your own business Twitter account is to dedicate the time to post useful information about yourself and your business.  If you don't have the time, then don't waste your time, setting up an account.

Twitter Tips for Individual Twitter Accounts

If you have decided that having your own account will work best for your business and you are excited to set aside time to maintain the account, here are some tips that will make your campaign more successful.

1. Have a plan - You need to have a plan to make your Twitter efforts worthwhile.  Figure out who you want to attract and when you want to tweet.  Set up reminders or post your plan in your office to help you remember.

2. Brand yourself - The icon that is associated with your Twitter account should be either your business logo, or a photo or cartoon of yourself, if you are the face of the company.  Make it part of your brand. Try to keep it consistent so that people visually recognize you.

3. Customize your profile - Take some time and customize your profile with colors and maybe a custom background.  Again, this is part of your branding.

4. Find people to follow - Use the search function in Twitter to find other people in your industry to follow.They may follow you back.  Also, figure out if people you already know are on Twitter.  Follow them and they will most likely follow you,  too!  This gives a great base of followers to work from.

5. Be a professional - There is sometimes a fine line with social media regarding professionalism.  The whole point is to offer a new social level to your business. However, you need to stay within reason.  Bottom line -  You are out there promoting your brand!

6. It is not always about you - Try and mix in information about your industry or business power partners.  Promoting others is a great way to promote yourself on Twitter.  You can also ReTweet (RT) other people's posts.  When you ReTweet be sure to also post the orginator's name. For example:

RT @melmoore SonicSpider is now offering new hosting packages to better fit small business needs.

7. Include links in your tweets.  If it makes sense, include a link so the reader of your tweet can go and get more information about the news or event that you are promoting. Use TinyURL..com to make your links shorter so they don't take up precious space!

8. Be interesting - Don't tweet about food or the weather unless you are a restaurant or the weather person.  Try to come up with new, interesting information to share with everyone.

9. Don't be annoying - It is important to tweet often, but there is such a thing as tweeting too much.  A good rule of thumb among experts is not to exceed 10 tweets a day.  Try and do a mixure of RT's and your own tweets.

10. Make it easy to be followed - Add a link so people can easily follow you on your website, email signature, eNewsletter and Press Releases.  You might also consider having your Twitter name printed on your business cards.
